Adam Goodale (Jake Worthington)

Post by William Hoyle »

Hey y'all,

Just published my latest Pedal Steel Spotlight article over at Keep Traditional Country Alive, this time featuring Adam Goodale - Jake Worthington's steel player and 2023 Texas Country Music Awards Steel Guitar Player of the Year.

Had a great conversation with Adam about his influences (Dicky Overbey, Jimmy Day, Jimmy Crawford, Buddy Emmons, Rick Price, Julian Tharpe), his gear (two Emmons Bolt-ons from '66 and '67, Telonics pedal, 80s Peavey solid-states and a Milkman/Little Walter rig), and his philosophy on tasteful playing.

One quote that really stuck with me: "Sometimes it needs nothing at all and it's best if you just take your hands off of the instrument completely and let the song breathe."
That's the kind of wisdom you don't learn from YouTube.

If you've got a few minutes, I'd be honored if you gave it a read. And if any of you have stories about the players Adam mentioned - especially Dicky Overbey or Julian Tharpe - I'd love to hear them. The history you folks carry in this forum is invaluable.
