My Set UP
When recording I go direct. I use my regular set up with digital sustain and Goodrich volume pedal but I skip my stereo steel and go into my DW Fearn Mic Pre. It has one of the highest over heads in the recording industry. I then use a compressor and eq if needed. I also send that signal into a Thermionic Culture summing mixer then on to tape. I have another way I still use the DW Fearn mic pre and eq and compression but I go into an Apogee Symphony I/O then into my iMac and Logic Pro x. By going direct I feel I have less in the signal chain. Less is more.

I tried the line out of my NV 400 a few times but engineers complained that the level was too low, yet the speaker volume was screamingly loud. I'm using PT 11, and mike a tube amp every time now. I love the end result.Alex Cattaneo wrote:If you have a Nashville 400, you can use the PRE AMP OUT in the back. The awesome thing about that is that you can play with any amount of reverb you like, but the reverb doesn't come out of that output. So you can play with a wet signal but a dry signal will be fed to your recording. So you get the benefits of direct recording and the comfort of using your amp and playing without headphones. Best of both worlds, really.
My chain looks like this:
Steel - Hilton VP - Nashville 400 - HHB tube preamp - Apogee Duet - Logic or Pro Tools
I do want to put together a totally direct set-up to record quietly, so next move will be a Lemay MK1 preamp or perhaps the new SMS tube preamp...
